‘Sats’ vs ‘bits’ debate reignites amid proposal to change Bitcoin base unit
A proposal to change Bitcoin's base unit, introduced by developer John Carvalho, aims to eliminate satoshis and divide Bitcoin's supply into 21 quadrillion units. Critics argue that satoshis are not more confusing than cents in the dollar. Block Inc. CEO Jack Dorsey supports the change, stating that "bits" would simplify transactions for newcomers. He noted that many people do not understand satoshis, which could lead to misconceptions about Bitcoin. Opponents, including Swan Bitcoin CEO Cory Klippsten, believe that users can grasp the concept of satoshis as easily as cents. Concerns were raised that the change might mislead people into thinking Bitcoin's value had drastically changed. The original Bitcoin creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, expressed openness to altering unit displays for usability. No improvement proposals have been implemented since the Taproot upgrade in November 2021.
