Scammer Lost $4.8M in Bitcoin to Tampered Ledger Wallets: Chainalysis
Summary
Chainalysis traced more than 60 BTC, worth about $4.8 million, stolen from a scammer in the Ledger hardware-wallet thefts. The funds came from a task scam and were moved into three Ledger addresses on September 22; all three were drained on October 9. Ledger says tampered devices sold through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis contained an implant that captured recovery phrases during setup and transmitted them over LTE. Ledger has not confirmed the number of victims or total losses, and its investigation continues. It has asked distributors in six Southeast Asian countries and Hong Kong to halt sales. A separate investigator’s estimate of more than $86 million in suspected thefts remains unverified by Ledger.
