Solana developers propose major overhaul to address hidden risk that could disrupt its network

Summary

Anza CEO Brennan Watt has proposed a shared, authoritative specification for Solana’s protocol rules. Solana currently documents upgrades through separate SIMDs, leaving developers to consult validator code and past decisions to determine how the network behaves. Under the proposal, upgrades would still be discussed through SIMDs, then formally incorporated into the specification after technical review and any required governance approval. The goal is to help teams building Agave, Firedancer and other validator software implement the same rules, improve testing and resolve disagreements that could threaten network reliability. Watt has published a draft covering 18 areas, including transactions, consensus, fees and rewards, but it covers only a limited period of Solana’s history and requires further work.
