Sony Dismisses PS5 Buyers' $508M Tariff Refund Claim as 'Illogical'

Summary

Sony asked a federal judge to dismiss a class action claiming PS5 buyers should receive part of the $508 million in expected tariff refunds. Sony argues that paying an advertised price for a voluntary purchase is not a legal injury and that the 2025 PS5 price hike was not clearly caused by tariffs. It cites other possible drivers, including inflation, currency shifts, component and logistics costs, competition, and demand. Sony also notes it raised PlayStation prices again in March, after tariffs were removed. Microsoft filed a similar motion in a separate Xbox case and is seeking arbitration. Nintendo previously made a comparable argument in its own case. Panic, maker of the Playdate handheld, is the only gaming hardware company so far to refund a tariff charge directly to customers. No court has ruled on the motions yet.
