South Korean Man Faces Murder Charge Over Bitcoin Bet Gone Bad
A South Korean man has been indicted for attempted murder and violating the Pesticide Control Act after allegedly poisoning his business partner with coffee laced with methomyl, a banned insecticide. The incident occurred on November 23 at a Seoul café following major losses in their joint Bitcoin investment business. Tensions reportedly escalated after the accused, identified as Mr. A, lost 1.17 billion won (approximately $811,000) in Bitcoin investments and his partner, Mr. B, assumed control of the funds. Mr. B survived after hospitalization and intensive care but continues to need medical attention. Prosecutors state Mr. A bought the poison before the investment loss, suggesting premeditation. The case reflects a broader increase in violent crimes linked to cryptocurrencies, such as physical attacks and kidnappings targeting digital asset holders, with reported incidents and losses rising sharply in recent years. The first court hearing is set for March 10.
