Taproot Wizards Debut Sale of Bitcoin NFTs 'Quantum Cats' Marred by Tech Issues

Summary

The sale of a debut collection of "Quantum Cats" Bitcoin inscriptions by Taproot Wizards was delayed due to technical issues. The sale, which was designed to honor a Bitcoin improvement proposal known as OP_CAT, was supposed to start with a two-hour "whitelist" window, but had to be postponed due to server overload from high demand. Despite the issues, 30% of the cats were sold, equating to around 90 BTC ($3.9 million). The collection was priced at 0.1 BTC ($4,300) per cat, with a potential total of 300 BTC ($12.9 million) if all cats were sold. Taproot Wizards, which raised $7.5 million in seed funding in November, apologized for the glitches. The Ordinals protocol, which debuted in 2023, allows the inscriptions of data into satoshis, creating non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on the Bitcoin network.
