Tether’s own AI study shows when buying a laptop costs more than cloud tokens
Tether invested an undisclosed amount in Tenstorrent, which recently raised $1.5 billion at a $6.2 billion valuation. The move supports CEO Paolo Ardoino’s push for user-controlled computing, but QVAC’s cost analysis finds that buying hardware solely for local AI may not save money at modest usage. A $2,399 laptop allocated over four years costs about $50 monthly; QVAC estimates its dense model can process 55 million tokens in a 176-hour month. At checked Alibaba Cloud rates, that workload would cost about $35.75, leaving estimated usage below the roughly 77-million-token monthly break-even point. Results vary by model, hardware, pricing and workload, and the comparison excludes operating costs and differences in output quality. Existing device owners may have a stronger case, while local AI can offer privacy, offline access and control beyond direct cost savings. The financing announcements do not establish a QVAC product integration.
