Thai Police Arrest Chinese Suspect in $6.1 Million Bitcoin Fraud Case
A Chinese fugitive, Tianwei, was arrested at Don Mueang Airport in Thailand while attempting to flee to Singapore, concluding a month-long manhunt linked to $6.15 million in stolen Bitcoin. The arrest occurred at 6 a.m. local time as he tried to board a flight. An arrest warrant was issued by Chiang Rai Provincial Court on May 16 after two victims reported the theft following a business meeting. Thai authorities had been alerted to his potential escape. Tianwei communicated in English during his arrest and claimed he had not been previously arrested for this case. Experts predict he may face extradition to China and that the Thai government will retain the stolen Bitcoin unless a significant fee is paid. This arrest is part of a broader regional crackdown on crypto fraud, with significant seizures reported in India and Vietnam.
