'The Sandbox' Adds Web-Based Games in Season 7 Accessibility Push
The Sandbox is making its crypto gaming and metaverse platform more accessible in Season 7 by allowing users to play select games directly from their browser without downloads or accounts. The update will feature at least 20 creator-built experiences plus content from major partners like Atari, “Black Mirror,” Steve Aoki, “The Terminator,” and the Bruce Lee estate. CEO Robby Yung emphasized that reducing technical barriers is central to boosting retention and engagement, which are now core metrics for the platform’s success. Season 7’s prize pool exceeds 650,000 SAND (about $52,000), rewarding player participation. Over 50% of new content is user-generated, reflecting a shift towards empowering creators, similar to models seen with Minecraft and Roblox. The Sandbox aims for low costs and transaction fees, staying true to Web3 principles so that creators retain more value. This shift comes as crypto gaming faces industry-wide challenges, with SAND’s price down 78% over the past year and many blockchain games shutting down due to poor retention and investment declines.
