UK politicians mull permanent crypto donation ban in wake of Nigel Farage scandal
Labour MPs are pushing to make the current pause on crypto political donations permanent, after Nigel Farage’s resignation reignited concerns about digital asset money influencing UK politics. The proposed amendments would tighten party and candidate donation rules and ban crypto contributions outright. Liam Byrne said the move is needed to stop wealthy crypto backers from funding populist political networks in Britain. Farage quit as MP for Clacton after reports of large contributions and in-kind support from crypto-linked figures, including a major “gift” from billionaire Christopher Harborne. He said he did nothing wrong but confirmed the parliamentary standards commissioner was investigating the donations. His resignation triggered a by-election, though major parties may not contest it. Labour is expected to consider the crypto donation ban amendments next week.
