UK Regulator Warns Soccer Clubs Over Unauthorized Crypto Sponsorship Deals

Summary

The UK Financial Conduct Authority warned football clubs, including Premier League teams, that sponsorships with unauthorized crypto businesses and trading platforms may breach financial services laws and expose fans to risk. The FCA said it has seen more club partnerships with firms that appear to be operating unlawfully, including providing regulated services and financial promotions without authorization, which can be criminal offences. Clubs face legal, operational, and reputational risks, while fans could be misled into trusting products because of a club’s badge. The FCA stressed that sponsorship does not mean regulatory approval and urged fans to check firms before using financial products. Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock supported the warning, saying sponsorship must not come at the expense of fan safety. The regulator is working with the government, the Premier League, and the new Independent Football Regulator as football’s growing commercial reliance makes clubs attractive to crypto firms seeking mainstream exposure.
