UK's National Crime Agency Freezes $13.6M of Premier League Money in Sorare Probe: Report
Britain’s National Crime Agency has frozen more than $13.6 million in a Premier League bank account while investigating possible links between those funds and alleged criminality tied to crypto company Sorare. The freeze was ordered by Westminster magistrates’ court in January 2025 under the Proceeds of Crime Act and is meant to prevent the money being moved during the inquiry. The sum was reportedly Sorare’s first payment under a four-year sponsorship deal announced in 2023. There is no suggestion of wrongdoing by the Premier League, which is seeking to vary the order. Sorare, a fantasy football platform built around digital player cards, is separately facing UK criminal proceedings after the Gambling Commission charged it in 2024 with providing gambling facilities without a licence. Sorare denies that its product is gambling and says it rewards skill. Regulators have also warned Premier League clubs about the risks of partnering with unauthorized crypto firms.
