US lawmakers from gaming states urge SCOTUS to take up Kalshi case
A group of US state lawmakers, through the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS), filed an amicus brief urging the US Supreme Court to hear New Jersey’s case against prediction markets platform Kalshi. New Jersey is asking the Court to decide whether state gaming authorities or federal regulators have jurisdiction over prediction markets and event contracts. The lawmakers argue that a ruling for Kalshi would strip states of power to regulate sports betting on prediction markets and create major confusion and harm. They say gaming regulation should remain with individual states and warn that casinos, pari-mutuel operators, and other regulated businesses could try to reclassify their products to escape state oversight. Kalshi has not yet formally responded to the Supreme Court petition and has until Nov. 9 to file its brief.
