Warren Flags Crypto Ties to Child Sexual Abuse in Letter to DOJ, Homeland Security
U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bill Cassidy have written to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and Alejandro Mayorkas, the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, expressing concern about the use of cryptocurrencies in child sexual exploitation. They cited a February FinCEN Trend Analysis and a January Chainalysis report, which identified digital assets as the preferred payment method for such crimes. The senators asked the agencies to specify what additional tools and resources they need to tackle this issue. The use of cryptocurrencies in child abuse cases gained attention following high-profile cases in 2019 and 2020. Despite perceptions of anonymity, law enforcement strategies and analytic tools have cast doubt on the privacy of crypto transactions.
