Donald Trump invokes US senator’s death to push crypto bill
Donald Trump urged the Senate to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act “in honor of” the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, saying Graham was a strong supporter of the bill. The Senate has only a four-week legislative window before August recess, making timing tight. The CLARITY Act would shift much crypto oversight from the SEC to the CFTC. Passage is uncertain because many Senate Democrats want ethics safeguards tied to lawmakers’ crypto interests, including concerns about Trump-linked crypto ventures. Graham died at 71 over the weekend and was not on the committees advancing the bill; he had voted for the GENIUS stablecoin bill but had not publicly backed CLARITY. With Graham gone and Sen. Mitch McConnell hospitalized, Republicans’ margin has narrowed, increasing the need for Democratic votes to reach 60.
