Bolivia Is Considering Adding Tether's USDT Stablecoin to National Payments System: Report

Summary

Bolivia is evaluating whether Tether’s USDT stablecoin could be used as a payment method, as the country’s economy stabilizes. Economy Minister José Gabriel Espinoza Yáñez said any adoption must be carefully assessed because Bolivia remains on the FATF grey list for anti-money-laundering and counterterrorism-financing weaknesses. He said regulations are being developed for people already using crypto, often out of necessity. Bolivia lifted its crypto transaction ban in 2024, which helped expand usage, and the country recorded $14.8 billion in crypto transactions from July 2024 to June 2025, ranking eighth in Latin America. Banco Bisa also began offering USDT custody services in 2024. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said USDT is increasingly a key tool in emerging markets.
