Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses are facing intense backlash over privacy and misuse, and have been nicknamed “pervert glasses.” Reports found women were secretly filmed with the glasses and the videos posted online without consent, while another investigation said contractors reviewing captured footage saw highly sensitive content, including bathroom use, nudity, credit card numbers, and sex. The controversy triggered a class-action lawsuit, scrutiny from U.S. senators, and calls from the ACLU and dozens of groups to abandon planned facial recognition features. Texas also opened an investigation. Meta later patched a workaround that let users bypass the camera-recording light, but critics said the fix did little to stop concerns. The backlash has led to public campaigns and event bans on the glasses.
