While Bitcoin Devs Debate Next Moves, IonQ Unveils Superion 256 Quantum Computer
IonQ announced Superion 256, a 256-qubit quantum computer it plans to deliver in 2027 and sell as a rack-mounted system available both on-site and through its cloud. The company says the machine combines technology from its Oxford Ionics and SkyWater acquisitions: trapped-ion qubits controlled by standard electronics and semiconductor-style manufacturing at lower cost and larger scale. IonQ says SkyWater has already fabricated first 256-qubit processors and prototypes have trapped ions at U.S. facilities. The company argues this design is meant to be mass-producible, with faster chip development cycles. It also outlined a longer-term Superion 10K roadmap, targeting error-resistant computing in 2027 and commercial production in 2028. The announcement comes amid discussion of quantum computers’ future risk to Bitcoin, though IonQ’s system is far from enough to break modern cryptography on its own.
