Why Solana’s new 250ms speed boost could actually trigger network instability

Summary

Solana moved to a 250-millisecond target slot time on Sept. 18. An early sample measured roughly 266ms per produced slot, with about 0.05% of scheduled slots skipped in epoch 1037. The reading is encouraging but too brief to establish long-term performance. A proposed 200ms setting would lower each block’s compute budget while keeping nominal compute capacity per second similar, making cadence and latency—not necessarily throughput—the main changes. Shorter slots leave validators less time for leader handoffs and recovery, with geographic distance and concentrated hosting or software dependencies posing potential risks. Engineers are testing transaction forwarding and cross-client execution. The 200ms feature remained pending as of Sept. 20, with no activation date; sustained performance across slot timing, skips, transaction landing and handoffs will be needed before proceeding. Alpenglow’s separate finality target is not the same as slot timing.
