Zcash’s November upgrade could freeze funds in legacy Sprout pool
Zcash holders with ZEC in the legacy Sprout shielded pool should move those funds before the planned NU7 upgrade, or they may lose the ability to spend them. Under ZIP-2003, NU7 would stop supporting the older transaction format needed to spend Sprout funds, making any ZEC left in that pool unspendable after activation. The proposal does not burn those funds and leaves open the possibility of future recovery, but warns access may never be restored. Community members and co-founder Zooko Wilcox have urged users to check old wallets for Sprout balances. NU7 is set for testnet activation on Oct. 6, with a decision on mainnet activation expected Oct. 20 for a targeted Nov. 5 launch. The upgrade would also shorten block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds while preserving the halving schedule.
