The Sotheby's auction of pixelated images known as "BitcoinShrooms" created using the Bitcoin blockchain's Ordinals protocol fetched around $450,000, five times the highest estimates, indicating mainstream interest in Bitcoin NFTs. The auction consisted of three images, including a pixelated avocado sold for over $100,000 and a design resembling a Super Mario mushroom sold for over $240,000. Over two-thirds of the bidders were new to Sotheby's. There are plans for more auctions in the future. The popularity of Ordinals, which launched last year, has caused congestion and high fees on the Bitcoin network. There is ongoing debate among Bitcoin users and developers about the filtering of NFT transactions as many see it as not aligned with the original purpose of Bitcoin. The images in the collection come from the BitcoinShrooms collection by the pseudonymous artist Shroomtoshi.
