A Routing Bug Took Solana 86% of the Way to Losing Finality
Solana narrowly avoided a finality halt when a single routing mistake at Teraswitch knocked 28.83% of staked SOL offline, leaving the network just 4.51 percentage points above the 33.34% threshold where finalization stops. The bad route propagated from Miami through Amsterdam and caused validators in Europe and Asia-Pacific to lose valid paths, while North America was unaffected. Engineers fixed it within about ten minutes, and service was back by 04:16 UTC. Postmortem data showed the outage was highly concentrated in one autonomous system, AS20326, which held 27.34% of network stake—above the Solana Foundation’s 25% target. Marinade Finance found 94% of that stake went down together, with 59 validators reappearing only after routing reconverged. The event exposed broader infrastructure concentration beyond a single host and prompted calls for better disclosure of failover and hosting diversity.
