Canadian Man Extradited to US Over Plot to Hijack University Supercomputers for Crypto
Canadian Ryan James Roach was extradited to the U.S. to face charges over an alleged scheme with Ontario resident Mathiew James Stubbings to hack university supercomputers from 2016 to 2019. Prosecutors say they stole credentials, installed malware and used victims’ computers to mine cryptocurrency, while routing attacks through compromised systems to conceal their identities. The charges carry up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Roach has been arraigned in New York; extradition proceedings for Stubbings continue in Canada. The Justice Department did not identify the cryptocurrency. Separately, Google’s threat intelligence team says attackers may increasingly hijack access to AI models, with some investigated incidents generating cloud charges exceeding $100,000 in a day.
