Cardano's ADA Token Now Accepted at Spar Supermarkets in Switzerland
Cardano’s ADA token is now accepted as a payment method at 137 Spar supermarket locations in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, enabled by the integration with DFX.swiss’s Open Crypto Pay platform. Shoppers can pay using ADA and other supported cryptocurrencies by scanning a QR code at checkout, with the stores receiving payment in Swiss francs regardless of the coin used. This move, part of a partnership involving DFX.swiss and BrickTowers, aims to promote blockchain adoption in everyday retail transactions. Open Crypto Pay does not implement dedicated double-spend protection, viewing it as an unlikely risk compared to other forms of non-payment. While most Spar locations in Switzerland are onboarded, stores in major cities like Geneva and Bern are not yet included. Switzerland has a progressive stance on crypto adoption, with hundreds of businesses already accepting Bitcoin. Despite local initiatives to further integrate cryptocurrencies into the national financial system, the Swiss National Bank has declined to add Bitcoin to its reserves, citing concerns over volatility and liquidity.
