Roblox Is Now Using AI to Rewrite Chat Swears and Slurs in Real Time
Roblox has introduced real-time AI chat rephrasing, which automatically rewrites messages containing profanity instead of replacing them with hashmarks. This aims to make conversations more readable and maintain civility while enforcing existing chat policies. For example, “Hurry TF up!” will appear as “Hurry up!” rather than blocked text. The feature is limited to chats between age-verified users within similar age groups and operates in all supported languages. AI rephrasing does not change enforcement: users who repeatedly violate profanity rules still face consequences. Roblox developed the feature with input from its Teen Council and is also improving its filters to detect moderation evasion tactics such as leetspeak. This update follows other AI-driven safety measures like real-time chat warnings and multi-language chat translation. The gaming industry is increasingly adopting AI moderation, with similar tools used by companies like Activision. Roblox states this approach supports safer, more enjoyable player interaction and will be continuously refined.
