Coinbase-Backed Ethereum Network Base Recovers After Block Production Issue
Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, was down for more than two hours after a block production problem halted the mainnet on Thursday, shortly before a scheduled upgrade. Base said funds remained secure while teams worked to fix the issue. The network later identified a consensus problem that caused an invalid block to be sequenced, preventing new blocks from being created. Block production began recovering as nodes restarted and resynced, though the root cause was still being investigated. It was Base’s first mainnet block production and deposit issue in 90 days, though it previously had about 30 hours of withdrawal delays in May. The outage comes while Base is still rolling out its Beryl hardfork upgrade, which is intended to support stablecoins and tokenized real-world assets and reduce withdrawal delays.
