Coinbase Hacker Trolls Crypto Sleuth ZachXBT After Moving $42M in Bitcoin
A threat actor linked to significant thefts from Coinbase users has publicly mocked onchain investigator ZachXBT via an Ethereum transaction. The hacker, identified by ZachXBT, used the message "L bozo" to deride him, accompanied by a meme video link. This occurred after the hacker transferred approximately $42.5 million from Bitcoin to Ethereum using Thorchain. Following the taunts, the hacker moved an additional 8,698 ETH (around $22.6 million). Coinbase confirmed that over 69,400 users were affected by a data breach discovered in May, leading to a $20 million ransom demand from attackers, which Coinbase rejected, instead offering a bounty for information on the perpetrators. The financial impact on Coinbase is estimated between $180 million and $400 million due to remediation and compensation efforts. ZachXBT is recognized for exposing crypto scams and has received substantial community support amid legal challenges.
