Crypto 'Wrench Attacks' Cost Victims $124M in Six Months, Up 12x: CertiK
Crypto-related “wrench attacks” surged in H1 2026, with CertiK verifying 52 violent or threatened extortion cases, up 33% year over year. Recorded financial exposure jumped to about $124 million from $10.5 million, and the average exposure per incident rose sharply. CertiK says these figures include ransom demands and frozen/recovered assets, and real totals are likely higher due to underreporting. The biggest shift was home invasions: 20 cases, about 41% of incidents, as attackers targeted victims’ homes and families to overcome resistance. Kidnappings remained common, and one murder was recorded. Europe accounted for 75% of cases, with France alone representing 33 incidents, tied to a visible crypto scene and prior data breaches that exposed targets. Attackers increasingly operate in organized layers, using leaked databases, exchange records, and on-chain activity to build target lists. Security guidance is shifting toward multisig, withdrawal delays, and family duress plans, since hardware wallets alone may not prevent forced transfers.
