Bybit’s EU payments arm secures Austrian e-money license

Summary

Bybit’s European payments arm, Bybit Payments GmbH, has received an electronic money institution license from Austria’s Financial Market Authority. The license gives Bybit a regulatory foundation to add payment and e-money services in Europe, including peer-to-person payments, merchant payment tools, open banking features, and card products. These services will be offered through Bybit.eu, alongside crypto services provided by Bybit EU GmbH, which has been authorized under MiCA since May 2025. Bybit EU serves EEA users except Malta, where passporting requirements apparently have not been met. The two Austrian entities will operate with separate permissions: one for crypto custody, exchange, placement, and transfer, and the other for regulated payment and e-money products. The move may improve Bybit’s relationships with banks and payment providers and reduce dependence on third-party payment infrastructure.
