Ethereum L2 Starknet Jumps 20% After Saying It Wants to Become an L1
Starknet says it is considering becoming a layer 1 blockchain, targeting 2027, to gain direct control over security upgrades and pursue quantum resistance without depending on Ethereum. CEO Eli Ben-Sasson argued that quantum computing and advances in AI could make cryptographic risks more urgent. Starknet’s proofs already rely on hash functions considered quantum-resistant, but some elliptic-curve components remain and are slated for replacement. Ethereum targets post-quantum infrastructure around 2029; Bitcoin has made no comparable commitment, according to Ben-Sasson. The proposal has no disclosed migration plan for Starknet’s existing apps and users, and would make the network responsible for its own security. STRK rose about 20% in 24 hours to roughly $0.073.
