EU lawmakers push crypto onto anti-corruption agenda

Summary

The European Parliament adopted a nonbinding resolution urging the European Commission to address corruption risks involving crypto assets, opaque ownership and digital tools in its upcoming anti-corruption strategy. MEPs also called for stronger tracing, freezing, confiscation and recovery of criminal proceeds, alongside tougher procurement rules, clearer lobbying and political-financing standards, and better protections for whistleblowers and investigative journalists. The strategy is planned for adoption by the end of 2026 and will complement the EU anti-corruption directive, which took effect in May.
