US government moves $770M of seized Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime

Summary

The US government transferred 9,261 Bitcoin, valued at about $770 million, to Coinbase Prime over two days. Galaxy Research said roughly half came from the Bitfinex hack recovery, while another portion was linked to Binance seizures. A further 2,456 BTC came from previously unidentified holdings and may reflect new law enforcement seizures. Coinbase Prime has custody of seized assets for the US Marshals Service. Although earlier government wallet transfers prompted speculation about sales, a March 2025 executive order says seized Bitcoin should be retained in a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The US Marshals and Justice Department were asked to comment.
