Fake Police Officers Held French Couple at Knifepoint in $1M Bitcoin Robbery
In Le Chesnay, near Versailles, three men posing as police officers entered a couple’s home, threatened them with a knife, and forced them to transfer approximately €900,000 ($1 million) in Bitcoin to the attackers’ wallet. The Versailles public prosecutor’s office confirmed the theft and stated that France’s Brigade for the Repression of Banditry (BRB) is investigating. No arrests have been made, but charges may include kidnapping, armed robbery, organized crime, and conspiracy. This incident is part of a growing trend of “$5 wrench attacks,” where criminals use physical threats, rather than hacking, to steal cryptocurrencies. France has seen a rise in these violent attacks, including invasions and kidnappings targeting crypto holders and executives.
