Kenyan Court Orders Sam Altman's Crypto Project to Delete Biometric User Data
A Kenyan court has mandated the deletion of all biometric data collected by Sam Altman's World project, previously known as Worldcoin, due to violations of data privacy laws. The High Court in Nairobi found that the project collected sensitive biometric information without valid consent from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) and used cryptocurrency inducements to obtain this data, breaching informed consent principles. The court ordered the World Foundation to delete the data within seven days and prohibited further collection without proper assessments and non-incentivized consent. This ruling follows previous controversies regarding World’s operations in Kenya and comes amid global scrutiny, with similar regulatory actions occurring in Indonesia, Hong Kong, Germany, and Brazil. Despite these challenges, World is expanding in the U.S., launching in six cities to distribute its native token, WLD.
