Mirae Asset completes Korbit acquisition, becomes largest shareholder

Summary

Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of a major South Korean financial group, has completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in Korbit, making it the exchange’s largest shareholder after regulatory approval. Korbit said its operating entity will not change and that trading, deposits, and withdrawals will continue normally. It also said customer assets remain separately held under South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act. Mirae Asset agreed in February to buy a 92.06% stake in Korbit for 133.48 billion won ($91 million) as part of an expansion into digital assets. Korbit is one of South Korea’s five won-based crypto exchanges, operating in a market where exchanges rely heavily on trading fees and must partner with banks to support fiat deposits and withdrawals.
