More Central Banks Are Exploring a CBDC, BIS Survey Finds
Summary
A Bank for International Settlements (BIS) survey reveals that 94% of the 86 participating central banks are considering creating a digital version of their national currencies, an increase from 90% in a 2021 survey. Most respondents are more likely to issue a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) accessible only to banks and financial institutions, rather than a retail version for public use, within the next six years. Over half of the central banks are considering factors such as holding limits, interoperability, offline options, and zero remuneration for retail CBDCs. The survey also found that stablecoins are rarely used for payments outside the crypto ecosystem.
