Protesters Rally Outside OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI Offices Over Industry Concerns
Around 200 protesters, including researchers and members of advocacy groups, marched in San Francisco outside the offices of Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI to demand a conditional pause in the development of advanced artificial intelligence. Organized by Stop the AI Race, the protest called for major AI companies to halt the creation of new, more powerful AI models if other leading labs agree to do the same, focusing instead on improving AI safety. Protesters also advocated for international treaties, suggesting that if countries like the US and China paused competing on powerful AI, resources could be redirected to beneficial applications. This demonstration follows similar efforts, such as the Future of Life Institute’s open letter calling for a moratorium on advanced AI development and hunger strikes by activists. Critics argue that pausing AI development could undermine US competitiveness, while organizers contend that unchecked AI progress risks safety and control. Suggestions for enforcing a pause include capping the computing resources used to train AI models. Further protests may be planned at other AI company locations to encourage internal advocacy by employees.
