Shipyard winds down IPFS work after Protocol Labs ends funding
Shipyard will shut down its engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure operations on Sept. 30 after Protocol Labs declined to renew funding. The loss leaves IPFS projects such as Kubo, Helia, Boxo, Rainbow, IPFS Desktop, and IPFS Companion without dedicated maintainers unless others step in. Shipyard will also stop running public IPFS infrastructure, including ipfs.io, dweb.link, delegated-ipfs.dev, and the bootstrap nodes; Protocol Labs controls those domains and will decide their future. IPFS itself is not ending, but stewardship will shift to a lighter model funded through IPFS Foundation grants to individual maintainers, while development on decentralized public infrastructure is expected to continue. Shipyard was formed in 2024 by former Protocol Labs IPFS developers.
