Solana targets faster finality, while Wall Street cuts the cash that must move
Solana activated Alpenglow on mainnet on Oct. 21, replacing TowerBFT with a consensus protocol targeting roughly 150-millisecond finality. The upgrade speeds the point at which transactions become irreversible but does not change execution, fees or asset-funding requirements; its block-propagation phase remains unscheduled. The analysis compares this latency improvement with NSCC equity clearing, where multilateral netting cuts payment obligations by an average of 98%. Faster finality can increase capital turnover when settlement is latency-bound, but modeled gains shrink sharply when custody, compliance and other processing delays dominate. Immediate gross settlement may also require more liquidity than netted settlement. Any institutional benefit therefore depends on combining fast finality with offsetting, liquidity mechanisms, and legal and operational arrangements. DTCC has separately reported live tokenized-securities transactions with more than 30 firms, while the analysis says real-world Solana settlement outcomes remain to be measured.
