Tether invests in Mercado Bitcoin as blockchain finance expands in Latin America

Summary

Tether invested $20 million in Brazilian crypto platform Mercado Bitcoin to help expand tokenized assets, stablecoin payments, lending, and other blockchain-based financial services across Latin America. Mercado Bitcoin, founded in 2013, has grown from crypto trading into a regulated financial platform with over 4.5 million users, more than 2 billion reais in issued tokenized assets, and licenses in Brazil and Europe. Tether said the company is one of the region’s most advanced regulated onchain finance platforms. The deal fits Tether’s broader strategy of using profits from USDT to back blockchain infrastructure and related businesses, following investments in stablecoin infrastructure, remittances, and even sectors like AI and biotech.
