The free ride for VanEck’s Bitcoin ETF is officially over after falling $1.4 billion short of growth target

Summary

VanEck’s Bitcoin ETF, HODL, ends its zero-sponsor-fee period on July 31 with $1.076 billion in net assets, about 43% of the $2.5 billion fee-waiver threshold. Because assets stayed below that cap, all trust assets remained fee-free through the final day. Starting Aug. 1, the fund’s 0.20% annual sponsor fee applies to all assets unless VanEck extends the waiver again. At July 30 asset levels, that fee would equal roughly $2.15 million a year, or $20 per $10,000 invested, excluding other trading and tax costs. HODL has seen $87.6 million in net outflows since the latest waiver extension filing, though it took in $2.3 million on July 30. Its post-waiver fee will match Bitwise’s Bitcoin ETF, sit below iShares’ 0.25%, and slightly above Franklin’s 0.19%.
