U.S. government moves $1 billion in bitcoin from Bitfinex hack wallet
Summary
U.S.-government-linked wallets transferred 12,267 BTC, worth about $1.01 billion, from funds seized in the 2016 Bitfinex hack to new addresses. No exchange deposit was recorded, suggesting wallet reshuffling rather than a sale. The move followed earlier transfers of seized BTC and USDT to Coinbase Prime, which may provide custody as well as trading. A 2025 executive order directs forfeited bitcoin into a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and says it should not be sold. Arkham estimates the government holds about $25.5 billion in crypto.
