Vitalik Proposes 16.77M Gas Cap for Ethereum to Enhance Security

Summary

EIP-7983 proposes a protocol-level cap on Ethereum transaction gas usage, setting a maximum limit of 16.77 million gas for individual transactions. This cap aims to enhance network security and performance by preventing denial-of-service (DoS) attacks and ensuring more predictable transaction processing costs. Currently, a single transaction can consume an entire block's gas limit, risking network stability. The cap encourages the splitting of large transactions, improving compatibility with zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs). Transactions exceeding the cap will be rejected during block validation. The chosen limit balances complexity and performance, accommodating advanced DeFi use cases while minimizing user impact. EIP-7983 builds on previous efforts to enhance transaction predictability. Vitalik Buterin has also advocated for simplifying Ethereum's architecture to improve efficiency and security.
