Wall Street’s $359 billion-a-day repo market has found a use for blockchain
Broadridge’s distributed-ledger repo platform processed an average of $359 billion daily in September, facilitating securities-backed financing and some intraday borrowing. The ledger coordinates collateral transfers while cash continues to move through conventional payment systems. Faster, shared records can reduce paperwork, funding costs and liquidity needs, but the reported activity is not loans outstanding and cannot be compared directly with broader repo-market measures. The technology does not create cash or collateral, guarantee lenders will renew financing, or replace central clearing. Its value is operational: helping institutions move collateral and settle short-term borrowing more efficiently, without eliminating repo-market funding risks.
