Western Union brings stablecoin remittances to Visa network with Stablecard

Summary

Western Union launched Stablecard with Rain, a digital wallet and Visa-branded card that lets users hold, receive, transfer, and spend USDPT, a US dollar-backed stablecoin issued by Anchorage Digital Bank on Solana. The product launched in 37 markets and is planned to reach more than 60 by year-end. It lets users receive Western Union transfers directly into a USDPT wallet, move funds to compatible crypto wallets and exchanges, and spend balances anywhere Visa is accepted, including via Apple Pay and Google Pay. The move is part of Western Union’s broader push into blockchain-based payments and remittances, especially for users in countries with volatile currencies who want dollar-denominated savings with easy spending access. Western Union introduced USDPT in May and has since expanded support through exchange partnerships. The launch comes as stablecoins gain momentum in cross-border payments, prompting rivals like MoneyGram to introduce their own dollar-pegged tokens.
