Binance's Future and Other Questions Post-Settlement
Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, and its founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ), have settled charges with various U.S. regulatory bodies, agreeing to pay billions of dollars in penalties and give the U.S government full access to its books. The allegations include violating U.S. law by allowing U.S users on the platform despite public claims to the contrary, ignoring customer identification and money laundering requirements, and obfuscating both its location and engagement with U.S customers. As part of the settlement, Binance will appoint independent monitors to assess its compliance with the terms of its plea. Despite this, Binance will continue to operate and it's estimated that the exchange will be able to afford the $4.3 billion fine. Meanwhile, CZ may face a federal prison sentence of around a year and a half, although he still reportedly retains most of his wealth.
