Chainalysis says violent attacks on crypto holders are on track for a record year, with more than $30 million stolen in the first half of 2026 across 46 incidents. These “wrench attacks” include home invasions, kidnappings, and hostage situations, using threats or violence to force victims to transfer crypto quickly and irreversibly. Kidnappings remain the most common tactic, but home invasions have grown to 37% of cases, and attackers increasingly target relatives or acquaintances to pressure victims. France has become the main hotspot, with 30 incidents through mid-2026, likely tied to a reported tax-record breach exposing wealthy crypto holders. Stolen funds are handled with varying sophistication: some attackers send crypto straight to exchanges, while others use DeFi tools, bridges, and swaps to obscure the trail and avoid centralized exchange compliance checks.
