Mozilla Tests an AI 'Smart Window' in Firefox—But Only If You Opt In
Mozilla is testing a new optional Firefox “Smart Window” that lets users chat with an AI assistant while browsing, but only if they choose to turn it on. It appears as a separate window alongside Classic and Private modes, and users can switch it off entirely. Mozilla says the feature is meant to keep AI user-controlled and avoid locking people into one ecosystem or forcing AI into browsing. The project is early and open to feedback from waitlist testers. It builds on existing Firefox AI features like the desktop sidebar chatbot and iOS “Shake to Summarize.” Mozilla is positioning Firefox as the independent, privacy-first alternative to AI-centric browsers, arguing that users should be able to decide whether, when, and how to use AI. The feature stays disabled by default, and Mozilla emphasizes open, accessible AI with a clear off-switch.
