Galaxy Commits Up to $5 Million to Prepare Bitcoin for Quantum Threat
Galaxy Digital launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative to help prepare Bitcoin for future quantum-computing threats. The program includes up to $5 million in developer grants, research from Galaxy Research, and a Quantum Advisory Council with academic experts. It will fund post-quantum cryptography work and begin accepting grant applications immediately. The effort focuses on “Q-Day,” when a quantum computer could break Bitcoin’s current elliptic curve cryptography and expose funds tied to public keys, especially in old or reused addresses. Proposed defenses include moving funds to quantum-resistant addresses and adopting new signature schemes, but network-wide upgrades could take years. The launch follows growing warnings from researchers and industry groups that quantum-capable machines could emerge within the next decade, putting millions of BTC at risk. Galaxy says the goal is to bridge the gap between rapidly advancing quantum research and Bitcoin’s slower governance process.
