Home invasions became the most common crypto wrench attack in H1 2026, with 20 publicly reported cases, up from one in H1 2025. CertiK verified 52 wrench attacks worldwide, a 33% rise year over year. Kidnappings increased from 12 to 16, while robberies fell from five to one. Estimated financial exposure tied to these attacks jumped to about $124.1 million from $10.5 million, including ransom demands, transfers, and recovered or frozen assets. Europe accounted for 39 incidents, and France alone for 33, making it the main hotspot. The pattern suggests criminals are shifting from digital theft to physical coercion of crypto holders and their families. In response, French authorities created prevention and alert systems and reported arrests. CertiK recommended stronger custody controls such as multisig/MPC, withdrawal delays, spending limits, and geographically separated signers.
